Going Green Cycle Project
Recycling Bikes For Greener Commutes

Upcycle – Recycle – Buy-cycle.

Our Mission

We transform unloved or abandoned bicycles into symbols of hope and opportunity for refugees and asylum seekers, whilst encouraging greener commutes for the environment.

We’re driven by a simple yet powerful mission: To help with green commutes by transforming unloved or abandoned bicycles into symbols of hope and opportunity. For every donated bike we receive, we commit to giving a bike away, ensuring it is road-safe, fully serviced, and ready to embark on a new journey.

Unwanted Bicycles

The idea is simple. We take in unwanted bicycles and repair them with the help of our local bicycle shops who offer us unused parts.

The emphasis of the project is about promoting the use of bicycles or bikes to people that may otherwise not be able to afford one as well as  encouraging people to drive less and exercise more which benefits our whole community, and the planet!

Once our bike project recycles the old bikes and transforms them, the bikes are donated to charities and refugees.

When we buy and restore bikes, you can be purchase them from our sites in Croydon. We sell men’s bikes, women’s bikes, children’s bikes and from time to time we offer specialist bicycles such as racing bikes and mountain bikes. Our prices ranges are approximately Men’s Bikes: £65-£450, Women’s Bikes: £45-£200, Children’s Bikes: £15-£150.

We run a pickup service to collect unwanted bicycles, which can also be dropped off to our croydon sites.

Suitable bikes are repaired and serviced under the supervision of our qualified instructors and the second hand bikes are then sold or offered to other charities. All the funds raised are re-invested into the project.

We try to repair bikes wherever we can, but when bikes are beyond repair, we strip them of their useful components and retain them for future use. The parts that are of no further use are then sent for recycling to prevent as much waste as possible from going to landfill, and just this year we have recycled over half a tonne of bike tyres so they can be repurposed into things such as synthetic turf and playground floors.

Green Commute Initiative is a Social Enterprise with a vision to get commuters out of cars and onto any kind of bike, with the dual purpose of improving both the individual’s health and wellbeing, as well as reducing the environmental impact of pollution and congestion from cars. We do this through our cycle to work scheme.

In an ideal world.

We want to get more people on bikes. Why? Think of a world where there is less congestion, less pollution, less crowding on public transport, and more car park spaces for motorists. Think of a world where employees become healthier, happier and more effective. We could have either dreamed or we could make it our mission, which is exactly what we did

The websites of the companies belonging to our sponsors websites will be linked to our website as not just sponsors but as an option for buying new bikes.
